Santiago de Compostela in Pictures

Peregrinos mass. Tears filled my eyes when they swung the incense. They don’t do it often. We sat on a pillar and had a fantastic view.

We toured the inside of the cathedral like good tourists. The organ was magnificent but it’s really hard to see on tiny “choose a picture” screen.

Because neither of us is capable of just resting, we toured the magnificent museum. I was particularly attracted to the architecture as the cathedral changed over the centuries. The stone and wood sculpture work is stunning, The architectural structure is not only functional but a work of art. The bells fascinate me. One bell is for quarter past the hour. Two bells is half past. Three bells is quarter to the hour. Four bells is followed by a deeper tone bell which rings out the number of the hour. It rings 24 hours a day. Apparently at night not every one is as enamored with them as I am!

Because neither of us is capable of just resting, we toured the magnificent museum. I was particularly attracted to the architecture as the cathedral changed over the centuries. Then we got silly and just played as we strolled through the town and beautiful park near our Pension. Pronounce it the Spanish way. It took me almost the whole trip to realize an alberge is a no-reservations hostel which is usually a large room with anywhere from 4-140 bunks and a shared bathroom down the hall. A pension is a reservations required (unless a room is available which isn’t often) and has simple rooms of single (two single beds) or double (one double bed) and usually a private bathroom. Breakfast (usually fruit, bread, pastries, yogurt and often cheese and prosciutto)and three course dinner may be included. Sometimes a place will offer both alberge and pension type accommodations in the same stop. A hotel is full service.

So much for our rest day. It was a magnificent spiritual and mental day although exhausting on the body. I am ever so grateful for my cane. It got a lot of use. Castle-like structures built centuries ago do not have standard regulations for stairs or passageways! Tomorrow we fly back to New York. I will not be blogging.
